In “Tagusari Bros.,” medical examiner Minoru and detective Makoto Tagusari (played by Shota Sometani and Masaki Okada, respectively) set out to discover who killed their parents 31 years ago.

But traditional justice won’t be served: Thanks to a recent amendment, their parents’ murders fall just outside of the statute of limitations. So the brothers instead opt for vigilante-style revenge, soon discovering that this will prove harder than they thought.

Up through the sixth episode, the show weaves a more traditional crime-of-the-week format into the overarching plot. Each new case links back to the one the brothers are desperately trying to solve, and the same questions are posed over and over: What does closure mean? What does revenge get you? What, really, is justice?
